UGC - Centre for Women's Studies
Centre for Women's studies (CWS) sponsored by the University Grants Commission has been established under XI Five Year Plan (2009) has been operational since 8 March 2010. The only one college in the entire state of Kerala got such a special recognition from UGC. Various Gender Sensitization Programmes and awareness classes for students, teachers, parents and community are the interior emphasize of the Centre for Women's Studies. The seminars and workshops completed under the aegis of the Centre for Women's Studies focused on Creating a Self- Autonomy among Women and Girls.
Center for Women's Studies employed an interdisciplinary approach in research, projects, orientation and awareness-building programmes, training Programmes. By facilitating research, extension works and Campus Film Festival on Women and their issues, centre for Women's Studies seek to enhance the visibility of women and gender issues inside the academic communities of the Universities, colleges and Local Communities. We have worked towards creating a platform for sensitizing parents of the students; members of self help groups and Schools in the Local Community.
Aims & Objectives
Saying in nutshell, under the teaching programme CWS aims at to create awareness and to make the students familiar with women's issues and women's rights and to enable them critically analyze the Women's issues from right perspectives.
I .Certificate Course in Gender Sensitization
The Centre conducts Certificate Course in Gender Sensitization for students at post graduate level. The course started during the academic year 2012 - 2013. Syllabi for this course is prepared with the help of external faculties and are regularly reviewed and updated. This course provided a basic understanding to the students about the Concept of gender, Feminist theories, Women and law, leadership and communication skills, self defense moves and reproductive health and healthy living practices with a special focus on India. The participants are evaluated on the basis of examinations.
II. Short - term Course in Aerobics
The Short - term Course in Aerobics started during the academic year 2014 -2015 in collaboration with the Department of Physical Education. The main focus of the course was to improve women's emotional state and helps them feel better.

Leadership Skill Training Programme for Mothers
The UGC Centre for Women's studies organized a leadership training programme for mothers on 15th of September 2015.The core aim of this venture is to develop leadership qualities among mothers.
Mr. Binu Kaliyadan (HR Director, I Corporate Solutions, Kochi) was the chief trainer of the programme. He is the former faculty of Kerala Institute of Local Administration (KILA).
Dr. Jaya Cheriyan (HOD, Department of Social Work & Advisory Committee Member, UGC - CWS) welcomed the resource person and audience. The main theme of the programme was developing leaders through experience - based learning The programme had two sessions. During the first session (9.30 am to 11 am) the experience - based leadership techniques used by the trainer helped mothers to develop their skills. The contemporary leadership tools and relevant video clippings during the second session (11.15 am to 12.30 pm) helped to encourage responsible leadership, critical thinking and the development of teamwork skills among mothers.
On 26-11-2015 UGC centre for women’s studies in association with department of social work organized the screening of film “The Beginning” directed by Athira Rajeev and Greeshma Vasudhevan, Students of Social work department, Vimala College.
Seminar on Personal and Environmental Hygiene
A seminar was organized by the UGC Centre for Women’s Studies on the topic “Personal and Environmental Hygiene” on 17-02-2016.The Class was handled by Ms.Danny Priyan ,Consultant ,Arogyakeralam. The main contents of the class were cleanliness among individuals from top to bottom and the environmental hygiene.
The class were very informative to the students as it cover almost all topics related to personal hygiene,and the students participated enactively in this programme.
Training on Entrepreneurial Skill Development for Women
UGC Centre for Women’s Studies in Collaboration with department of Home Science organized an Entrepreneurial On job training on Baking for the women’s of Thrissur Corporation on 23rd,24th,and25th February 2016.Sri.K Sivaprakasam, Baking technologist, Institute of Baking Technology, Chennai was the trainer of the programme.
The Training programme was intended to empower women by making them self sufficient through hands on training of bakery and confectionary. The resource person described the methods to bake varieties of Recipes like: Shrewsbury Biscuits, Melting Marvels, Sweet& Salt Biscuits, Bread, Pizza, Hot cross Buns, Diabetic Bread, Vanilla Cakes, Birthday Cake, Rusk, Danish Pastry,etc..
The students of the training programme were from different sectors of the society who wanted to be self sustained. They utilized the presence of great baking technologist Sri.K Sivaprakasam in this training programme well.He explained many useful tips to make recipes more tastier.
Women's Day Celebrations
UGC Centre for women's studies celebrated international women's day on 8th march 2016.A training programme was initiated by the centre in collaboration with department of Homescience.The chief guest of the training progrmme was Ms.Pavizham,senior councilor.The training on baking cake was offered to the Mother's of SOS Mulayam.
As a part of Women's Day celebration a Gender Film festival was coordinated by the centre in collaboration with Film club and department of Sociology.The reviews and discussions were made on the screened films by Mr.K C Santhosh Kumar
Gender Film Festival
UGC Centre for Women’s Studies organized a film festival on 8th march 2016.
The film festival consisted three strong films on gender that reveals the features of women’s struggle in India, The life of a Transgender and the love among lesbian pairs.
At first screens the short film “Redefining The Peace” whichexplains the struggle of Indian women especially that of Magdalena peter,Medha patkar, Irom Sarmila, C K Janu etc who were trying to eradicate the problems of the weaker sections of the society.
The second film was XXWHY. It is a short story which sheds light on plight of transgender. XXWHY is a documentary film on Sree Nandu a female to male transgender. The film has shown all the aspects of his life like apparel, hobbies, sexual life, marriage, and social identity crisis.
At last screened the film “coming out” which shows the influence of lesbianism on the members of a family and its different versions.
Mr. K. C Santhosh Kumar defined different aspects related to the women struggles, Transgender issues and lesbian love and marriage in between these three short films.
The short films were enjoyed by the students with eagerness and they became aware about many concepts they had never seen before. The description by the resource person on the related topics made students more knowledge worthy.
Inauguration of the Activities of CWS for the academic Year 2016-17
The activities of the UGC Centre for Women's studies for the academic year 2016-17 has been inaugurated by Mrs.Nishanthini IPS,the COP of Thrissur on 03-08-2016.The Chief Guest was welcomed by Ms.Mony Geege ,the director of the CWS.The session was started with prayer .After the inaugural ceremony Mrs .Nishanthini IPS gave message to the students .She shared her experiences both from family life and from her profession as well.Madam awarded prizes for the winners of different competitions held by CWS and NSS.Miss Anu P P Assistant Professor of department of Malayalam delivered vote of thanks.
Inauguration of the Charkha 2016
UGC Centre for Women’s Studies in collaboration with the department of Home Science conducted Two Day
Exhibition cum Sale and Competition “CHARKHA 2016” on 22 and 23 Aug 16.Seven Entrepreneurs came from
different areas and showcase variety of products their products. Students also exhibited their own products. In
coordination with this exhibition many women entrepreneurs got the opportunity to exhibit their products.
Sr.Maries V L, Principal of Vimala College inaugurated the programme and gave message to the
students.Inter departmental competitions were also organized as a part of this ceremony. “Fashion show
Competition” to promote the handloom garments, “Spot Designing Competition” and “Hair Style
Competition” were conducted.
Celebration of the Voluntary Blood Donation Day
The UGC Centre for Women’s Studies in collaboration with NSS unit of the Vimala College Carry out the
celebration of Voluntary Blood Donation Day on 6th October 2016.The Chief guest of the programme was
Dr.V.Govindan Kutty, Director, IMA Blood Bank Thrissur. The programme aimed to aware the matured
students about the facts on Blood donation.PG Non Catholic students and NSS volunteers participated in the
Awareness Class on Sexual Harassment at Work Place
The UGC Centre for Women’s Studies conducted an awareness class on sexual harassment at workplace on
1st November 2016 at Vimala College Auditorium.The resource person of the programme was Mr.K.C
Santhosh Kumar,Director MAYA(Media Action with Youth and Adolescent) .All the UG and PG Non-
Catholic students were participated in the programme.
On Job Training on Bakery and Confectionary
On job training course on bakery & confectionery for the women on 24th 25th and 26th August
by the UGC Centre for Women's Studies, Vimala College . Sri.K Sivaprakasam, Baking
technologist, Institute of Baking Technology, Chennai was the trainer of the programme.
Leader Ship Skill Training for the Mothers
UGC –Centre for Women’s Studies in Collaboration with National Service Scheme of Vimala College organized
a “Leadership Skill Training Programme for Mothers” on 12th January 2017 . The core aim of this training
was the development of “Leadership Qualities ” among mothers. Mrs.Neelima Ranjith (Assistant Professor,
